Knowing your audience is one of the most important skills any upstart entrepreneur or comedian needs to have a firm grasp on. Come to think of it, I feel like everyone should know their audience. Many times a friendly reminder to “read the room” can be a massive embarrassment for your inner verbal daredevil and have some serious implications.
In a growing world of possibility and diversity, we need to choose our words and how we convey concepts carefully. It’s not even about self preservation at this point, it’s about getting your point across effectively and impactfully. What’s the point of saying something just to be met with rolling eyes and groans? And what happens when your poor joke detailing why there’s no holiday bonuses this year lands on a stone faced virtual meeting crowd?
While being incredibly offensive is not something we can directly help you with, that was your parents’ (and now HR’s) job , we can definitely help you gauge how your participants responded to your latest morsel of information. You see, all people have subtle ways of telling you what they think. While a portion of us will give you immediate and fiery feedback, others stew silently and in a virtual meeting of 10 plus people, you can’t possibly read all of their faces.
